Canvey Island take on Southern League Premier Central side St Ives Town in the Emirates FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round, this coming Saturday (17/09) at the Moviestarr Stadium.
The Saints come into this game having made a good start to their league campaign, currently sitting 4th in the Southern League Premier Central, playing their trade at the same step as the Gulls, albeit in a different division geographically.
They progressed into this round of the competition by beating Essex Senior League side Barking 4-0 in the 1st Qualifying Round. However, their last league outing saw them lose 2-1 at home to Leiston on Tuesday evening in the league.
Meanwhile, the games have been coming thick and fast for the Gulls, despite the recent break in play last Saturday. We earned ourselves a credible point in our last outing, a 1-1 draw with Haringey Borough in the Isthmian Premier Division on Tuesday.
The two sides have only met twice previously, this being over two legs of a tie in the Emirates FA Cup back in 2019. After a goalless draw in Cambridgeshire, the sides played out a lively replay at Park Lane, which went right down to the wire and into extra time. However, it was Canvey who emerged triumphant that evening, as talismanic striker Jason Hallett scored in the last few minutes of extra time to win the game 3-2 and take the Gulls into the next round.
This will be St Ives Town's best cup run to date should they progress, so the Gulls will have a tough job on their hands in slowing down a side with real momentum. However, Canvey have gotten the better of a few higher ranked sides in recent seasons, particularly when reaching the Proper Rounds of the Cup, so they will be sure to give their everything on the day.
Our last great cup run was hampered by the Covid-19 pandemic, so Brad, Sammy and the squad would appreciate all the support and backing from our fantastic supporters as we look to progress once again!
Prior to this match, we will join with teams across the nation in paying our respects HM Queen Elizabeth II as the country continues it's mourning period for the late monarch. We ask supporters to join us for a minutes silence as we remember her life ahead of her funeral on Monday.
