Bury Blown Away At Park Lane

Match report by David Powell.

Canvey Island scored an impressive 4-0 victory over Bury Town at Park Lane to take them up to 2nd in the Isthmian North table.

In wet and windy conditions, Canvey were dominant throughout and played some good football in front of a crowd of just over 300.

With Storm Eunice still having some after effects with a wet pitch and a swirling wind, Canvey had to play the first half attacking into strong gusty conditions.

Despite this, they settled well and after a quiet opening 15 minutes gradually took control of the game. On 17 minutes, a good left wing cross from Evans Kouassi wasn't dealt with by the Bury defence and fell to Conor Hubble who side stepped his marker and curled an effort inches wide of the post.

There was a scare in the Canvey defence when Cemal Ramadan sent a low ball across goal from the right but failed to pick out Ollie Hughes in the six yard box.

Lewis Ridd was twice called into action saving skidding shots from Elliott Ronto and Kouassi on the slippery, wet surface.

Despite Canvey's pressure, Bobby Mason had to be alert to save an awkward shot from Will Gardner from distance that caught on the wind on 26 minutes.

Canvey kept pressing and looking to score the opening goal. A fine run from Kouassi cutting in from the left saw him fire in a low shot that Ridd saved well with his legs on 29 minutes.

The opening goal finally came on 41 minutes. Kouassi did brilliantly to hold off a robust tackle from Joe White, get into the penalty area and then release a pass to Bradley Sach in space who fired a shot from the left across Ridd and into the net.

Sach was unlucky not to extend the score-line a minute later when he got on the end of Odei Martin Sorondo's cross from the right but headed inches wide at the far post.

In the second half, Canvey started with the wind to their advantage and Sach had the ball in the net on 59 minutes after turning home Ronto's header but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Minutes later, Gulls were 2-0 up. Hubble's free kick from range hit the wall and fell to Jamie Salmon who struck a stunning effort that crashed off of the crossbar. Ronto was unable to get a connection on the loose ball but eventually it fell to Mike Finneran who crashed home a composed finish high into the net to score in consecutive home games.

Hughes had the ball in the net for Bury on 68 minutes but the effort was ruled out for offside and any hopes of a Bury comeback was ended on 79 minutes with a third goal for Canvey.

Excellent work by Ronto and Sorondo down the right saw the ball crossed to Sach who with his back to goal showed a great first touch before turning and firing home from 12 yards.

The icing the was put on the cake with a 4th goal 7 minutes from time. Callum Fitzer's right wing cross picked out Kouassi on the left hand edge of the penalty area. He side-stepped a defender before sending a low finish into the corner of the net.

That goal completed the scoring and Canvey were able to give Mckenzie Davidson and Mason Hall making his first appearance of the season a run out from the bench in the last 10 minutes of the game.

Gulls now look to continue their good recent form when they travel to Witham Town next weekend.
