Canvey Island suffered another disappointing home defeat losing to Newmarket Town despite taking an early lead.

Gulls have taken just 1 point from their opening 4 games and now find themselves sitting in the bottom 4 of the table.

The first half was an entertaining affair with both sides creating chances.Canvey took the lead on 6 minutes.

From a right wing corner, the ball dropped to Elliott Ronto in the six yard box who volleyed home emphatically past James Young.

Soon after Jack Cawley made a fine tackle to deny the Newmarket striker as he had a sight on goal.

Young made a good stop to keep out Ross Wall's 20 yard effort on 14 minutes before Newmarket scrambled an effort off of the line after good work by Evans Kouassi and then Cawley headed over.

Newmarket finished the half strongly and in injury time, Lennon King picked the ball up 25 yards from goal and curled a superb shot into the top corner that David Hughes couldn't get to.

Into the second half and some great work down the left by Kouassi provided a chance on 58 minutes for Dominykas Bobrovskij but his low shot from 10 yards was blocked by a combination of Young and the defender for a corner.

After a number of near misses, Newmarket took the lead on the 80th minute.

Elliott Reeves cut in from the left and curled home a superb effort into the far corner of the net.

Canvey tried unsuccessfully  to find a way back into the game despite winning a number of set pieces in decent positions.

The Newmarket defence held firm to pick up 3 points and exact some revenge for their FA Cup defeat by the Gulls earlier in the month.
