The Gulls head into the game after picking up a point away at Brightlingsea Regent on Tuesday night, following the 2-1 win at Grays Athletic last weekend. After a difficult spell earlier in the month, those results give Canvey something to build on as they look to climb the table.
Saturday’s visitors will provide a tough test, with Cambridge City having made a good start to the season. But there is no need to look too far back for a reminder that Canvey can get the better of them.
The two sides met at the Steve Taxis Stadium in the FA Trophy last month, when the Gulls came from two goals behind to win 3-2 in a cracking cup tie. Ernest Okoh, Jack Cawley and Mitchell May were on target that afternoon to turn the game around and send Canvey through to the next round.
Of course, Saturday is a different game, and Cambridge will be keen to avoid a repeat of that afternoon. But it was a reminder of what this Canvey side can do when they keep going and take their chances.
For the Gulls, the challenge is to take the confidence from the last two results into another home game and give the supporters something to cheer about. With Cambridge arriving on the Island, there is another opportunity to test themselves against one of the division’s sides and pick up some valuable points.
It is also the first of two home games in a few days, with Hashtag United due at the Steve Taxis Stadium on Tuesday evening. A good result on Saturday would be a welcome way to start that run.
We hope to see as many supporters as possible down at Park Lane to get behind the lads.
