The Gulls went down to a disappointing 3-2 defeat against Bowers & Pitsea at the Len Salmon stadium. In a front of a crowd of just under 400 on August Bank Holiday Monday, Gulls lost a disjointed derby game that they felt they should have won. However, the Gulls made a terrible start to the game when former yellow Finlay Dorrell found himself one on one with David Hughes and slotted the ball home. Jayden Silcott-Brown fired wide from 20 yards after a promising run before Canvey settled down and started to look the better team. On 25 minutes, Mitchell May fired into the side netting from a tight angle before 4 minutes later the Gulls levelled when Ernest Okoh broke down the right and squared to Ross Wall who tapped home from close range against his former club. On 40 minutes, Conor Hubble fired a free-kick wide after a foul on May before Wall turned the provider playing a fine through pass to May who confidently fired past Sam Nwabuko to give Canvey the lead on the stroke of half time.

Half-Time: Bowers & Pitsea 1-2 Canvey Island

Into the second half and Bowers cause was helped when George Scales was shown a second yellow card and then ultimately a red. Down to ten men, Canvey were up against it as Bowers looked for a way back into the game. Bowers drew level in controversial circumstances on 58 minutes when Manny Shana went down under the challenge of Hughes as he attempted to get in on goal. The referee awarded a penalty that Finlay Dorrell dispatched well for his second goal of the game. Bowers went in front on 66 minutes when Josh Colyer rose highest at the near post to head home a left wing free kick across Hughes and into the corner of the net. Silcott-Brown had a shot soon after that just cleared the crossbar before the Gulls responded with Elliott Ronto seeing an effort blocked on the line by a Bowers' defender after Jack Cawley's long throw had caused problems in the Bowers defence. The Gulls pushed forward in search of an equaliser and despite winning a number of throws in good positions that took advantage of Cawley's long throw skills, Bowers defended well to seal their first league win of the season. Canvey look to bounce back next Saturday when they face Newmarket Town in the FA Cup at The Steve's Taxis Stadium.
