The Gulls came away from their first visit to Cambridge City's Sawston Community Stadium with a superb 2-1 victory. For long spells if the game Garry Kimble’s side had to soak up pressure from the Cambridge City attack with David Hughes in the Canvey goal in particular having an excellent game. The Gulls though took their chances well and worked hard to pick up an impressive 3 points. Canvey made the perfect start when Jack Cawley's long throw into the box from the left flicked off of Cambridge City defender Jayden Randell’s head and into the net.
It took City until the 34th minute to test Hughes with the keeper making a good reaction save at his near post to save a close range effort. A few minutes later James Philp made a fine reaction save for City keeping out Mitchell May's first time volley. City responded 5 minutes before half time with Hughes making another good save as they ended the half strongly.
Half Time: Cambridge City 0-1 Canvey Island
Canvey made a good start to the second half and should have extended their lead when substitute Conor Hubble sent Mitchell May through but he fired wide of the target with just Philp to beat. Hughes continued to impress in the Canvey goal making a fine reaction save to prevent the striker from scoring after the initial shot had been blocked by the Gulls' defence. On 71 minutes, a fine run from Louis Arrowsmith created a chance for May but his curling effort from the left hand side of the penalty area was deflected wide for a corner.
Ernest Okoh had troubled City with his pace and direct running and on 79 minutes after picking up the ball on the left hand side of the penalty area he drove towards goal and saw an angled shot that hit the inside of the post and roll into the net for Canvey's second of the afternoon. Rasheed Salau could have extended Canvey's lead going into injury time with his first touch after coming on as a substitute but he scuffed his shot straight at Philp when well placed. Charlie Lewis headed a presentable chance wide at the far post before City made the last few minutes tense for Canvey when Charlie Royle poked home from close range to reduce the arrears in the 4th minute of stoppage time. The Gulls though held out for a well deserved win to give them a real confidence boost before Tuesday night's home fixture with Brightlingsea Regent.
