Match Report: Paul Lerman edited by Nick Wright
Man of match: Tobi Tinubu
An end of season game with nothing to play for proved to be a turgid affair with few chances for either side. The Gulls probably started the stronger with Tobi Tinubu showing great energy down the right, but crosses into the box easily dealt with.
Wingate then countered at the other end, winning a corner which was well defended. A bad tackle from a Wingate defender led to a yellow card and a free kick but Canvey failed to make anything from it.
The hosts tried to push on, but only achieved a long range shot on target for their troubles. At the other end, Canvey had a Foxley shot easily collected by the keeper.
Just before half time a the best move of the first half saw a combination of Bello and Keller break through for Wingate, but they could not capitalise on the opportunity. There was a rather funny moment as the game entered injury time, with the sprinklers coming on while the teams were still on the pitch, leading the referee to call for an early end to the half.
In the second half and Wingate took the initiative and in the 64th minute, they thought they'd broken the deadlock, but Keller was clearly offside with his effort.
Canvey had a late surge, hitting the post and hitting the rebound wide. In the end their was a flurry of set pieces, but none led to a clear cut chance. Wingate brought on an number of youngsters to give them a taste of first team football. The Gulls Sammy Knott came on for last minutes after what looked like a bad injury to Jimmy Wallace.
Not the most entertaining game of the season.
On a final note good luck to Coner Hubble in the London Marathon on Sunday.
