Canvey Island continue a big February in the Isthmian League by contesting a South Essex Derby on Saturday, with Billericay Town the visitors to the Moviestarr Stadium.

Our Opponents

The Blues are enjoying a great season in the league thus far, with the club sitting third in the table at the time of writing, just a point behind second placed Chatham Town with a superior goal difference.

Their form has been good since the start of the year but not perfect, with impressive wins agains Lewes (twice), Cray Wanderers and Enfield Town slanted alongside defeats to Bognor Regis Town and Folkestone Invicta. They come into this game on the back of one of those wins against Lewes though, winning 3-0 in challenging conditions at the Dripping Pan on Tuesday evening.

Promotion has always been the aim for 'Ricay this season and manager Gary McCann certainly has the squad at his disposal to do just that. They are solid across the park, with the experience of Tom Bender and Matt Johnson at the back, a talented midfield with Adam Leathers and Alfie Cerulli among others, as well as a potent strike force, with former Canvey and Bishop’s Stortford striker Franke Merrifield leading the line.

We've already taken on the Blues once this season, with an injury time goal from Elliott Ronto giving the Gulls their first win away at the New Lodge since 2015, much to the delight of the travelling Yellow Army that evening.

The Gulls

Canvey meanwhile, will be looking to get back to winning ways after a run of straight defeats, the latest of which was a 3-0 reverse to another of the league's promotion chasers in Enfield Town.

Despite a good start to the game, the Gulls came unstuck in the second half, also failing to score for the first time since December 23rd. They'll be hoping to emulate the heroics of the previous meeting with Billericay Town this season and get back on track ahead of another busy week.

***
Yellow Army, we thank you all as always for your fantastic support. You were vocal and proud on Saturday despite the difficult result, and the squad greatly appreciates your backing in these moments.

As we all know, the form book can often get torn up in a local derby, with pride and bragging rights on the line as well as three points.

We have the potential for home advantage to be relevant in this encounter though, and we know you'll help make Park Lane a fortress as week seek a vital league win.

See you all on Saturday.

Come on you Gulls!
