Hard fought point for the Gulls

Canvey Island picked up a second successive midweek draw in the league as they took a point home from Enfield Town on Tuesday evening.

In a game with similar echoes to their last league encounter, the Gulls were left to rue their finishing while being indebted to their defenders as they remained competitive in a game either side could have won.

It was Canvey who had the better of the chances in the first half.

Evans Kouassi had the best of them. The talented attacker gave Enfield nightmares a few weeks ago in the Cup and was at looking to do the same again here.

On 12 minutes, he managed to take down a good ball through from the midfield. He had his marker beaten for pace but couldn't beat Nathan Mcdonald in the home goal, the keeper saving well to keep his side level.

Just a few minutes later and it was almost a case of deja vu, Kouassi yet again getting in sight of goal but this time firing his shot straight into Mcdonald, as the scores remained level.

After a shaky start, Enfield began to grow into the game and test the Canvey back line as they cut in from wide. They found the Gulls defence in good form however, Hall and Girdlestone holding strong in the area as Tinubu and Chandler did well to carry the ball forward on the counter.

Canvey's night was made a little more difficult on 34 minutes however as Hall limped off injured. With no like for like change available on bench, Elliott Ronto was forced to deputise in defence as Odei Martin Sorondo took his place in the middle.

The Gulls had another good chance to take the lead just before half time. Some good play between the Canvey midfield and attack found the ball land at the feet of Bradley Sach. From around 25 yards out, he drilled a low shot towards the bottom corner, almost deceiving McDonald as the keeper was forced to tip the effort around the post.

Into the second half and the game became more stretched as both teams pushed for a winner.

Kouassi once again had a chance to test the Enfield goal on 52 minutes, but Mcdonald made it three saves from three as he dived well to keep the shot out.

Enfield began to up the tempo afterwards, piling pressure on the Canvey defence as they searched for a winner of their own. The Gulls held their own however, getting in several key blocks and headers to protect Bobby Mason's goal and keep the score level. Chandler and Ronto in particular did well to keep out the dangerous Marcus Wyllie on the Enfield left.

Canvey were quick on the counter when they got the ball, passes from the defence filtering from midfield to attack. The home defence managed fo limit their opportunities though, forcing the Gulls into limited shots from range that flashed wide of the target.

The home side's best chance for a winner came 81 minutes. They won a free kick just on the edge of the Canvey area. The resulting shot was saved well at the feet of Bobby Mason and the Gulls managed to scramble the ball clear.

Canvey managed to have the best of the last five minutes but couldn't test the keeper for the all elusive goal. Bradley Sach did manage to get on the end of a cross in the 89th minute, but his header was straight into the arms of the goalkeeper.

Deep into injury time and the Gulls had a big call for a penalty waved away by the referee. As the ball was played in from a corner, Ronto appeared to be dragged down after a pull at his shirt. The referee was unmoved however, much to the ire of the travelling supporters behind the goal.

The referee blew for full-time shortly afterwards, giving Canvey another point in the league on their travels. They now move quickly on to Saturday and the visit of Corinthian Casuals to the Moviestarr Stadium.
