Gulls face Needham test in FA Trophy

Canvey Island return to cup action on Saturday afternoon as Needham Market make the trip to the Steve Taxis Stadium in the FA Trophy third qualifying round.

After Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw at Tilbury, attention now turns away from the league and towards a competition which has provided plenty of memorable occasions for the Gulls over the years.

Needham arrive on Canvey having had a busy couple of weeks themselves. The Marketmen were involved in a 3-3 FA Cup draw with National League South side Braintree Town last Saturday before travelling to Cressing Road for Tuesday night’s replay. That result means the focus for Tom Rothery’s side now switches to the FA Trophy, with Canvey standing between Needham and the next round.

There is plenty of quality in the Needham side. The Marketmen were promoted to Step 2 in 2024 and currently compete in the Southern League Premier Central Division. They have also made a solid start to the current campaign, with wins over Worcester City and Stratford Town amongst their early league results. (Needham Market FC)

Canvey will therefore know that Saturday represents a different sort of challenge to the one they face week in, week out in the Isthmian North. But cup football can often provide its own opportunities, and the Gulls will be looking to make home advantage count.

There is also plenty of history between these two clubs. Needham have been familiar opponents for Canvey over the years, with meetings producing their fair share of memorable moments. A 2-0 FA Trophy victory at Needham in October 2015 remains one that will stick in the memory, while the return visit a few months later produced a dramatic 3-2 Canvey win after the Gulls had found themselves 2-1 behind.

This weekend is another chapter in that history, although both clubs have changed considerably since those meetings.

For Canvey, the FA Trophy provides a chance to put the league to one side for the afternoon and enjoy another cup tie at home. Needham will arrive looking to respond immediately after their FA Cup disappointment, while the Gulls will be hoping to make the most of their own opportunity to progress.

With a place in the next round at stake, there should be plenty to play for at the Steve Taxis Stadium.
