Canvey Island booked their place in the next round of the Emirates FA Cup on Tuesday evening after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Newmarket Town in the First Round Qualifying replay at the NYO Stadium. After Saturday’s 1-1 draw at the Steve’s Taxis Stadium had left the tie finely poised, both sides headed into the replay knowing that 90 minutes stood between them and progression.

The Gulls started brightly and looked to take control of proceedings, but Newmarket proved stubborn opposition, with chances at a premium as both sides battled for the decisive breakthrough. Canvey continued to press as the second half progressed, with the Gulls remaining patient in their search for a way through the Jockeys’ defence.

Michael Bareck provided the assist as he helped create the opening for Ross Wall, who made no mistake to fire Canvey into the lead with just eight minutes of normal time remaining. The late breakthrough gave the Gulls the advantage they had been searching for and left Newmarket with little time to respond. Canvey held firm during the closing stages to see out the victory and secure their place in the next round of the Emirates FA Cup.
