Canvey Island continued their good pre season form on Tuesday evening, as they came from behind to draw with National League South side Aveley at the Steves Taxi's Stadium.
Canvey named two of their new signings that evening, Ewan Sanchez and Ollie Parsons, among the starting XI, whilst fellow signings Chris Harris and Matt Yates, were gifted minutes in the second half.
The first half was a closely fought affair, with Canvey matching their higher ranked opposition, though creating little from it. The best chance of the half fell to the visitors, forcing a good save from Bobby Mason at his near post after a break into the box. A midfield trialist also suffered an unfortunate injury late in the half, meaning Finlay Dorrell was introduced sooner than he first thought.
With a raft of changes for both sides at half time, the match livened up, with both sides creating opportunities. Mason was again forced into a good, diving save to deny the visitors, while at the other end, Conor Hubble put a free kick narrowly over the crossbar.
It was Aveley who would take the lead though after being awarded a spot kick. Despite Mason guessing the right way, they converted the chance to make it 1-0.
It would be 2 minutes, when a ricochet in the box was turned in by a trialist.
The Gulls heads didn't drop though, and they rallied to take the game to their opponents. It earned them a goal back on 77 minutes, where a clever flick on by Harris played in Dorrell, who hit a composed finish to half the deficit.
Suddenly, they were in the ascendancy, creating multiple chances as they troubled their opponents. It came as no suprise when they equalised, but the finish was an exquisite one angled in by a trialist, following on from a sustained spell of pressure.
It left the majority at Park Land impressed with their sides resolve late on by the full time whistle.
Canvey now go to Isthmian League North side Heybridge Swifts on Saturday afternoon, before returning to face Tilbury at the Steves Taxi's Stadium on Tuesday evening.
