Canvey Island 4-2 Tilbury

Jonathan Andrews20 Jul 2022 - 20:16

Entertaining friendly in record heat.

Canvey earned their second win of pre-season after beating a resilient Tilbury side 4-2 at Park Lane.

On a stifling July evening, with temperature's around 30 degrees at kick off, the Gulls were red hot in front of goal against their former league opponents.

It was the visitors who started the game in better shape however, with Canvey at sea in defence. After a scare inside the opening five minutes, with an effort hitting the post, Tilbury took a deserved lead after a sharp passage of play around the box managed to slip in former Canvey player Callum Fitzer, who hit a composed finish past the Trialist keeper.

This seemed to spark Canvey into life, with some neater and stronger play resulting in an equaliser on 33 minutes. A trademark through ball managed to find Evans Kouassi, who beat his marker and the onrushing goalkeeper to put the game level.

Canvey were hungry for more and it only took them a few minutes to go ahead. Some more, well crafted passing play resulted in a low ball sneaking into the area and the waiting boot of Bradley Sach to bag his second of pre-season from close range.

The score could have easily increased as time went on, with two big chances falling to Tobi Tinubu, one of which being an outrageous bicycle kick that went just over the bar. Mason Hall then missed from close range with a header before Evans Kouassi drew a strong save from visiting keeper Josh Blackburn as halftime approached.

Tilbury weren't to be outdone to their credit however, hitting the woodwork again with a powerful effort from outside the box, before they found an equaliser of their own in injury time. Roman Campbell rose best to meet a cross at the far post and nodded in to make the game a desmond at the break.

Into the second half and the Gulls began to show their quality. Conor Hubble hit the post from a free kick on 49 minutes before Joe Paxman saw an effort deflected off the line five minutes later.

Eventually, Canvey went ahead for the second time on 74 minutes. Tobi Tinubu, who had been looking determined for a goal for much of the evening, got into a good position in the penalty area before being brought down near to goal. The referee waved away any penalty appeals, but this didn't deter the winger, who won the ball back and lashed a powerful shot home from a tight angle.

One of Canvey's midfield Trialists nearly scored a spectacular counter-attacking goal not long after, dribbling through much of the Tilbury midfield before his effort drifted just wide.

It was to be one of the Trialists who would seal the win for Canvey with nine minutes to go though, with some more neat attacking play finding it's way into the net after being poked home from close range.

The Gulls now make the short trip to league rivals Bowers & Pitsea this coming Saturday to compete for the Memorial Trophy.
