Bedford Town and Canvey Island will need to do it all over again on Tuesday night following a goalless draw in the Emirates FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round at The Eyrie on Saturday.
Manager Mark Bentley named the same starting XI that drew 2-2 with Tilbury on Bank Holiday Monday.
The home side featured 37-year-old forward Craig Mackail-Smith in attack, a veteran of over 400 Football League appearances for the likes of Peterborough United, Brighton & Hove Albion and Wycombe Wanderers.
The match started in low key fashion, with both sides taking their time to find their rhythm. Tobi Tinubu and Connor Tomlinson both had shots for Canvey and Bedford respectively in the opening quarter of an hour, but both went harmlessly over the crossbar from wide positions.
On 22 minutes a neat ball in behind the Gulls’ defence found the run of Craig Mackail-Smith who had managed to keep himself onside. Left with only Bobby Mason to beat, Rob Girdlestone did brilliantly to recover and rob Mackail-Smith of the ball as he prepared to pull the trigger.
Canvey had two great chances soon after this scare, both falling to forward Matt Price.
On 24 minutes a good ball around the corner from Harrison Chatting played Price through on goal. He raced forward and attempted to round goalkeeper Alex Street, but he won a perfectly timed sliding tackle inside the area to win possession. Failure to connect with the ball would have resulted in a penalty and red card, but the timing of the tackle was immaculate.
Less than 60 seconds later Street raced out of his area to attempt to win a header against Matt Price but came off second best. Price steered a shot through the legs of a defender towards the now unguarded goal, but the ball rolled across goal and agonisingly wide of the bottom corner from the right.
The hosts had a couple of half chances before the break, with Drew Richardson heading wide from a corner on 33 minutes before Danny Setchell struck a free kick from 25 yards into the wall five minutes later.
Goalless at the break, it was the hosts who fashioned the first chance of the second half. A good ball over from the left by full back Lewis Miccio found the run of Connor Tomlinson, and he managed to poke the ball goalwards. However, the effort lacked power and allowed Bobby Mason to be able to comfortably save.
Miccio then had an opportunity of his own on 59 minutes when the ball was played into his feet inside the area from the left. His first touch was good and gave him space to get a shot off, but when it came it flew high and wide.
The best chance that either side had to avoid a replay came with five minutes remaining. A through ball from deep by Jamie Salmon released Matt Price, and he advanced into the box down the left of the pitch. The forward was under pressure from defender Zak Brown but managed to get his shot off, with the ball going across goal but the wrong side of the upright.
Price had a free kick saved shortly after before Bedford Town substitute Harmeed Ishola saw an under-hit effort from 18 yards kept out by Bobby Mason.
Six minutes of additional time were played, but neither side were able to find the all-important goal and ensure that the two teams will meet again at Park Lane on Tuesday night.
