Canvey Island exited the Emirates FA Cup at the 2nd Round stage on Monday night, losing 3-0 to Boreham Wood in front of the BT Sport cameras.
The Gulls conceded early and failed to recover, never really looking like scoring a goal of their own to make things interesting.
Manager Mark Bentley changed his formation, playing three central defenders by bringing Rob Girdlestone into the side in place of Harrison Chatting. Captain Jey Siva also came in at left back to replace Ben Sampayo.
Boreham Wood took the lead after only nine minutes when Kabongo Tshimanga drove into the Canvey box from the right, finishing into the bottom corner after beating Bobby Mason who dived to his left.
They doubled their lead on 28 minutes with a slice of good fortune. Kane Smith’s shot from the left caught a wicked deflection off Mason Hall, wrong-footing Bobby Mason and beating him at his near post.
Bobby Mason pulled off a good save 10 minutes later following a counter-attack. Kabongo Tshimanga held up possession, playing it to his right for Sorba Thomas. He shot low from the edge of the area, but Mason did well to keep it out diving low to his right.
He did even better five minutes before half time when Matt Rhead got his head to a corner, flicking across goal from the left. This time Mason flung himself high to his left, turning the goalbound effort behind for another corner.
After Mason turned a Sorba Thomas free kick over the bar on 61 minutes, Canvey had their first shot on target six minutes later. Elliott Ronto pulled the trigger from the edge of the box, but saw his effort comfortably saved by Nathan Ashmore high above his head.
The play was soon back up the other end, with Mason saving with his legs from Thomas before another free kick was awarded. This time Thomas’ effort was stopped by Mason but not held, although the keeper managed to pounce on the loose ball before Kabongo Tshimanga could score his second of the evening.
Canvey started to pose more of an attacking threat after replacing defender Rob Girdlestone for attacking midfielder Harrison Chatting, but still struggled to create clear cut chances. The closest they came was on 79 minutes when Evans Kouassi linked up with substitute Ryan Charles, but his shot from the edge of the box was straight at Ashmore who saved with ease.
The final goal came on 83 minutes when Matt Rhead got his head to a cross, although Mason managed to keep it out diving to his left. However, the play was recycled, being clipped in from the right and headed home by Rhead at the second attempt.
The full time whistle sealed Boreham Wood's safe passage into the 3rd Round where they will host Millwall of the Championship.
