Canvey Island's good start to the season continued with a 2-0 win away to ten-man Dereham Town in the Emirates FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round on Tuesday night.
The Gulls registered their third clean sheet in three matches in the process, but had to survive some nervy moments in the second half.
Manager Mark Bentley named the same starting XI as the side that drew 0-0 with Romford on Saturday.
The first chance of the evening came on 10 minutes when a long-range effort from Adam Hipperson was well saved by Bobby Mason, who did well to keep track of the swerving ball. They had another opportunity soon afterwards, but this time Jerry Dasaolu's shot from a tight angle went across goal and wide of the target.
After a difficult opening period, the match turned on 27 minutes when Magpies goalkeeper Elliot Pride was shown a straight red card for fouling Tobi Joseph outside the area when the forward was through on goal. Things got even better for Canvey when Conor Hubble stepped up and dispatched the subsequent free-kick past substitute goalkeeper Joe Rider and into the bottom corner.
Joseph saw a shot saved by Rider on 39 minutes, but soon after Elliott Ronto doubled Canvey's advantage with a fine curling finish following a good passage of play.
Both sides had chances to score around the hour mark, with Dereham shooting straight at Bobby Mason before Evans Kouassi saw a chance snuffed out by the defence after rounding the keeper.
The hosts were then awarded a penalty on 63 minutes following a handball inside the area. However, Mason did brilliantly to save low down to his right to maintain Canvey's two-goal lead.
Harrison Chatting had a goal ruled out for offside on 66 minutes, and then save a shot saved by Rider five minutes later after a cross from Conor Hubble.
Dereham's final chance of the evening came on 72 minutes when forward Toby Hilliard thumped the upright following a set-piece. The rebound fell kindly for Rhys Logan, but his follow-up effort was punched clear by Mason.
