Canvey Coastwatch was formed in 1999, as part of the recently formed National Coastwatch.
Originally we were at Holehaven , but moved to Leigh Beck in late 2020. We work closely with the Coastguard at Dover, the nearest Coastguard Station. From our watchstation we log everyone and everything that moves along the shore or on the river: Walkers, dog walkers, children on lilos, kayakers, swimmers, paddleboarders, small dinghies and sloops right up to enormous container vessels and car carriers.
Our watchkeepers look out for any kind of incident or accident, whether involving persons or vessels of any size and inform Dover Coastguard, who will allocate whichever asset they deem necessary: Lifeboat, Helicopter or Drone etc.
Our watchkeepers are all volunteers and some of them knew next to nothing about the sea or tides when they joined. Our training is relaxed but thorough and is done at the volunteers own speed. They learn how to use radar radios and follow incidents on camera.
No one in the Coastwatch are paid. We receive no funds from the Government. We raise funds from our community and sympathetic local companies and organisations. Without this the station would close. Our watchstation has to be well equipped with upto date technology.
It costs around $40000 to set up a station and at least £5000 a year to run a station.
There are 60 stations around the coast and each station is expected to be self sufficient. There will be donation tins around the ground and in the bar and Canvey Coastwatch will be grateful for any contributions.
If you would like to become a volunteer we will be in the clubhouse before the home match with Billericay Town on Saturday 27th December. Alternatively please contact Anne on 07956 363185.
You are welcome to visit the station on Canvey at any time again please contact Anne.
