Canvey Island return to cup action this Saturday afternoon as Cambridge City visit the Steve’s Taxis Stadium in the FA Trophy Second Round Qualifying, with kick-off at 3pm.

The Gulls will be looking to build on their recent Emirates FA Cup success and continue their progress in another national competition, while Cambridge City arrive on the Island with plenty of confidence following an impressive cup victory of their own.

The Lilywhites head to Canvey after an emphatic 6-1 victory over Maldon & Tiptree in the Emirates FA Cup First Round Qualifying on Saturday 5 September. Cambridge City produced an impressive attacking display at the FWD-IP Community Stadium in Sawston, racing into a commanding position before going on to record a six-goal victory. The result booked their place in the next round of the FA Cup and will give the visitors plenty of momentum heading into Saturday’s FA Trophy tie.

The Gulls also come into the fixture on the back of a cup victory. Following a 1-1 draw with Newmarket Town at the Steve’s Taxis Stadium in the Emirates FA Cup First Round, Canvey travelled to Newmarket for the replay on Tuesday evening and secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory. The decisive moment came in the 82nd minute when Ross Wall found the back of the net to send Canvey through to the next round. It was an important result for new manager Kevin Horlock’s side and provides the Gulls with another opportunity to progress in a national cup competition.

There is very recent history between these two sides, with Cambridge City and Canvey Island having already met in the Isthmian North Division this season. The fixture took place at Cambridge City’s Sawston on Saturday 15 August, with the Gulls coming away with an impressive 2-1 victory. Canvey took the points despite Cambridge City pulling a goal back late on, giving the Gulls an early-season win over today’s opponents.

That result will add an extra edge to this afternoons contest, with Cambridge City having the opportunity to avenge their league defeat while Canvey will be hoping to repeat their success and secure another cup victory over the Lilywhites.

The Opposition
Cambridge City, nicknamed The Lilywhites, were formed in 1908 as Cambridge Town, before adopting the Cambridge City name in 1951 when the city was formally granted city status.

The club spent much of its history at the City Ground on Milton Road and enjoyed some of its strongest years during the 1950s and 1960s, regularly attracting sizeable crowds. City won the Southern League championship in 1962/63 and later reached the Conference South, finishing second in 2004/05.

Following the closure of the Milton Road ground in 2013, the club spent a number of seasons groundsharing before establishing their new home in Sawston.

By Car:
Exit M25 at Junction 30 and take the A13 towards Southend. You will reach a series of mini roundabouts. At these roundabouts, take the A130 towards Canvey Island. At the next roundabout take the 2nd exit which will keep a sports centre on your right and follow signs for Canvey Island Football Club.

Eventually, you will enter a one way system. Keep left through the one way system and after one mile you will pass the Transport Museum on your right. Park Lane is on the right hand side shortly afterwards, with The Steves Taxis Stadium located in front of you. There is plenty of parking outside the ground.

By Train:
Benfleet Station is 40 minutes from London Fenchurch Street and 50 minutes from London Liverpool Street on the C2C line. The station is 5 miles from the ground. There is a taxi rank around the back of the station. Alternatively, you can use the frequent bus service from the front of the station.

By Bus:
You can use the number 22 or 27 bus to be dropped directly outside Park Lane. Alternatively, you can use the number 21 or 21A to be dropped by the sea wall. From here, continue walking in the direction you travelled across some playing fields, and you will see The Steve’s Taxis Stadium on your left.
