Canvey Island FC make their first away trip of the new Isthmian League North Division campaign on Saturday afternoon when they travel to face Cambridge City at the Sawston Community Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm. The Gulls will be looking to respond positively after suffering defeat in their opening league fixture, while the Lilywhites arrive with confidence high following an impressive FA Cup victory at Lowestoft Town.

Canvey Island began their league campaign at the Steve's Taxis Stadium last Saturday but were edged out 2-1 by Gorleston. The visitors took all three points from Canvey in a closely fought contest, with Gorleston confirming their victory with goals from Aaron Bullent and Lewis Johnson. The result means the Gulls head to Cambridgeshire searching for their first points of the campaign. Despite the disappointment of the opening-day defeat, Canvey will know there is plenty of football still to be played and will be hoping to turn their competitive start into a positive result on the road.

Cambridge City come into Saturday's encounter having enjoyed a superb start to their FA Cup campaign. The Lilywhites travelled to Lowestoft Town in the Extra Preliminary Round last weekend and produced an emphatic 4-1 victory to book their place in the next round. Cambridge City confirmed the result following the game, with the win also leading to a revised fixture schedule for August.

That result will give City plenty of momentum ahead of their first home league fixture of the season. Canvey will therefore face a side full of confidence, with Cambridge having already demonstrated their attacking threat in competitive action this season.

The Hosts
Cambridge City FC were formed in 1908 as Cambridge Town, at a time when Cambridge had not yet been granted city status. The club competed in the Southern Amateur League before becoming one of the founder members of the Eastern Counties League in 1935. Following the Second World War, Cambridge Town won the Spartan League three times between 1945 and 1950.

Cambridge was officially granted city status in 1951, and the club subsequently adopted the name Cambridge City. The Lilywhites went on to enjoy considerable success in the Southern League, winning the championship in the 1962/63 season. During the late 1950s and 1960s, City were also capable of attracting some of the largest crowds in non-league football, regularly recording attendances of more than 3,500 and occasionally exceeding 10,000.

After leaving their historic Milton Road home in 2013, Cambridge City spent a period groundsharing before their new Sawston home was eventually developed. Construction began in 2019, and the club now plays its home matches at the FWD-IP Community Stadium on West Way.

By Car:
From the Steves Taxis Stadium, Park Lane, Canvey Island, leave the stadium and head towards the A130. Follow the A130 towards the A13 and then take the A13 westbound. Join the M25 northbound and then take the M11 northbound towards Cambridge. Leave the M11 at Junction 10 and take the A505 towards Cambridge. Continue onto the A1301 towards Sawston. In Sawston, follow the signs towards the town centre and then towards West Way. Cambridge City FC's ground is on West Way, Sawston, Cambridge, CB22 3FG. The journey should take around 1½ to 2 hours, depending on traffic.

By Bus:
Travelling by bus is more complicated because there is no direct bus from the Steves Taxis Stadium to Cambridge City FC. You would first need to take a local bus or taxi from the stadium to Benfleet or another nearby transport hub. From there, travel towards Cambridge, most likely requiring one or more changes. Once you reach Cambridge, go to the city centre and take the Citi 7 bus towards Sawston. Get off in the Sawston area and walk the remaining distance to the Cambridge City FC ground on West Way. This option will take considerably longer than travelling by car.

By Train:
For the train journey, first travel from the Steves Taxis Stadium to Benfleet railway station, either by local bus or taxi. From Benfleet, take a c2c train to London Fenchurch Street. Walk across London to Liverpool Street station, where you can catch a Greater Anglia train to Cambridge. Once you arrive in Cambridge, take the Citi 7 bus towards Sawston and get off in Sawston. From there, walk to Cambridge City FC's ground on West Way. The train journey is likely to take around 3.5 hours or more in total, including the bus and changes.
