Garry Kimble’s side return to the Steve’s Taxis Stadium this evening as Brightlingsea Regent provide the opposition in an intriguing Isthmian League North Division clash. After an encouraging away victory at Cambridge City on Saturday, the Gulls will be looking to build on that result under the lights and make it back-to-back wins.
The Gulls head into the match-up in good spirits after an excellent 2-1 away victory against Cambridge City at the Sawston Community Stadium. The Gulls took the lead through an own goal before Ernest Okoh added the second to secure all three points. Cambridge pulled a goal back, but Canvey defended their advantage to record a valuable victory on their first visit to the ground.
The result was particularly pleasing after they had suffered a 2-1 defeat to Gorleston in their opening league fixture, making Saturday's victory an important response.
Visitors Brightlingsea, began their league campaign on Saturday with a goalless draw against Tilbury at North Road. In a closely contested opening-day encounter, neither side could find the breakthrough, meaning the visitors arrive on Canvey Island with a point already on the board. The 0-0 draw also saw Regent keep a clean sheet in their first competitive fixture of the new campaign.
The Opposition
Brightlingsea Regent Football Club was formed in 2005 when Brightlingsea United and Regent Park Rangers amalgamated. The club's roots, however, stretch much further back, with Brightlingsea United originally founded in 1928. Regent have enjoyed a steady rise through the non-league pyramid, winning the Essex & Suffolk Border League Premier Division in 2010/11 before gaining further promotions.
The club's greatest achievement came in 2016/17 when Brightlingsea Regent were crowned Isthmian North champions with an impressive 103 points, earning promotion to the Premier Division. They spent four seasons in the Isthmian Premier before being relegated back to the North Division at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.
