Squad Continues To Take Shape

Manager Mark Bentley has moved to retain six of last season’s squad as well as making three exciting new signings.

The players to have committed for the 2019/20 season are:

• Kane Gilbert
• Josh Hutchinson
• Ryan Melaugh
• Ade Osifuwa
• Harry Palmer
• Elliott Warren

Defenders Jake Jolliffe and Alex Stephenson will also report back for pre-season as they continue their rehabilitation from lengthy injuries.

Talks are ongoing with other members of last season’s squad.

In addition, the three players to have signed for the Gulls are:

Michael Finneran

25-year-old central defender who joins from Bostik North rivals Grays Athletic. A local lad, Michael supported Canvey as a child, going on to play for the youth team and reserve team before leaving in search of first team football.

Having cut his teeth in the Essex Senior League, he went on to captain Romford in the Bostik North before joining Grays in February 2018 where he played regularly in the heart of their defence.

On his arrival, Michael said: “It’s been a long time coming! I was always hoping that this would happen one day but wasn’t sure when.

“I feel the time is right and it will make me so proud to play for the club I supported as a boy, and hopefully that pride will come across in my performances.”

Sammy Knott

Comfortable either on the wing or at full back, Sammy is 23-years-old and another Canvey-born player. He is the son of ex-Gulls player from the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, Steve Knott.

Sammy played for our successful Academy side before moving into senior football with the likes of Concord Rangers, Aveley and East Thurrock United.

His 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons were hampered with injury, but last year saw a return to fitness with spells with Concord Rangers, Tonbridge Angels and Waltham Abbey where he spent most of the campaign.

On joining the club, Sammy commented: “I’m buzzing to have joined and can’t wait to get started. Out of all the phone calls I’ve received over the summer, Mark Bentley’s was the one that I was hoping for.

“I know that me playing for Canvey Island will have made some of my friends and family happy and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Albert Levett

25-year-old central midfielder who signs from Brentwood Town where he was captain last season. This will be Albert’s third spell with the Gulls, but in both of his last two stints he found first time football hard to come by.

Since then however he has picked up plenty of experience with Barking and Brentwood, scoring seven times from midfield for the latter in 2018/19 and gaining plenty of plaudits for his performances.

Albert said: “After speaking with the gaffer it was clear that he is looking for players that want to play for the club. I’ve always had a soft spot for the Gulls and will definitely give my all for the cause.

“The signings the gaffer has been making shows the ambition he has for the season and I’m excited to get going.”

We welcome all three players to the club and wish them a successful season with the Gulls!
