Late Goals Inflict Cruel Defeat

Canvey Island Youth U16’s Blue lost a thrilling Southend & District Junior Sunday Football League U16’s League Cup Final, going down 4-3 against Basildon United U16’s Lions at Roots Hall on Sunday.

The Gulls came back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 with two minutes remaining before being undone by two late goals.

Canvey came into the match in second place in Division A, while Basildon are champions-elect in the Premier Division.

Basildon took the lead after only two minutes when a long ball was pumped forwards which released the pacey Jack Hynd in behind the Canvey defence. Hynd ran the ball to the edge of the box before firing across goal from the right and into the bottom corner.

Hynd scored again four minutes later when the Bees were awarded a free kick deep on the left wing. Captain Kye Chrystie delivered the ball into the box which Hynd flicked on with his head and past goalkeeper Sonny Crane.

Canvey pulled a goal back on 23 minutes when a lofted ball from the left found the run of Harry Cowper. Goalkeeper Kieran Finch came off his line to shut down the shot, but Cowper finished from 18 yards with a delicate chip over the Basildon custodian.

The goal sparked Canvey into life and suddenly it was one-way traffic towards the Basildon goal. On 27 minutes Billy Brace had a shot on the turn from the edge of the box tipped wide by Basildon keeper Kieran Finch. Ewan Nevett’s subsequent corner found the head of Harry Cowper, but his effort hit the top of the crossbar.

Basildon survived this period of Canvey pressure and were back up the other end on the half hour mark. Sonny Crane did well to save from Jack Hynd, diving low to his left and tipping the ball wide to deny Hynd his hattrick with a shot from 18 yards.

Four minutes later a long ball released Shemarie Perkins in behind the Gulls defence, but having run to just inside the area he poked his shot wide with only the keeper to beat.

Trailing 2-1 at half time, Canvey equalised nine minutes into the second half when Harry Cowper grabbed his second of the afternoon. His shot from just inside the box caught a slight deflection, wrong footing the keeper and flying high into the back of the net.

Cowper then came a whisker away from putting the Gulls ahead on 56 minutes when he was played in through down the middle of the pitch. In what was a very similar chance to his opener, Cowper chipped the ball over the keeper with the outside of his foot but this time could only watch as it went millimetres wide of the target.

Canvey got their noses in front on 67 minutes in stunning fashion when Alfie Beadle received possession 30 yards from goal, looked up and crashed home an unstoppable shot into the top corner which left Kieran Finch in the Basildon goal with no chance.

Beadle had further chances to extend the lead, the first of which coming less than a minute after his first. Canvey were awarded a free kick out on the right wing which was played to the back post and found the head of Beadle, but this time he put the ball the wrong side of the post from close range.

On 72 minutes Beadle’s perseverance nearly paid off when he hassled Max Cantello who was attempting to shepherd the ball back to his keeper. Beadle managed to get in between Cantello and the ball and looped a shot goalwards, but the shot lacked the required power and Finch was able to grasp the ball into his chest facing his own goal.

As the match drew towards its conclusion Basildon flooded forwards in search of an equaliser. On 76 minutes a good cross from the right found Dominic Pulley at the back post, but his downward header was brilliantly saved by Sonny Crane before Pulley’s follow up effort was blocked on the line.

However, Pulley didn’t have to rue this missed chance for long, as two minutes later he scored a late equaliser. A ball across the face of goal from the right found Pulley who hit the post, but the rebound fell kindly for his to score at the second attempt into an unguarded net.

This goal so late in the game knocked the stuffing out of Canvey, and the winning goal came with virtually the last kick of the ball when Basildon were awarded a free kick out on the right. Joseph Foggarty whipped the ball in to the far post which went over everyone and crossed the line to win the cup for the Bees.
