Gulls Complete Treble At Roots Hall

Canvey Island Youth U14’s Yellow won the Southend & District Junior Sunday Football League U14’s League Cup with a 1-0 win against Basildon United U14’s Lions at Roots Hall on Sunday.

The Gulls, beaten finalists last year, went one better this time around thanks to a first half strike from Samuel Adebanjo to complete the treble having already won their Division A league title and the League Trophy.

Playing against a team who finished runners-up in the Premier Division, the Gulls started slowly but nearly opened the scoring on 11 minutes when McKenzie Davidson struck a low shot across goal from the edge of the area which struck the post. The ball rebounded to forward Samuel Toyin-Adebanjo but his follow up effort from close range was well saved by goalkeeper Charlie Cantwell.

Up the other end a superb last-ditch tackle from defender Callum Rogers denied Tom Johnson an equaliser from close range for Basildon United on 18 minutes.

The Gulls took the lead on 33 minutes when Samuel Toyin-Adebanjo was played in down the left. The powerful forward burst into the area and placed his shot across goal to open the scoring.

Basildon came close to equalising on the stroke of half time when the ball fell to the feet of captain Sam Carter on the edge of the box, but his shot flew a yard over the bar.

Leading 1-0 at half time, Canvey nearly doubled their advantage inside 30 seconds of the restart. However, Basildon goalkeeper Charlie Cantwell pulled off a tremendous save, diving low to his right to turn Samuel Toyin-Adebanjo’s effort wide for a corner.

Cantwell them pulled off an equally good save on 58 minutes after Samuel Toyin-Adebanjo and Jake Frost had broken through inside the area. The two forwards got in each other’s way but didn’t stop the latter from getting a shot off which Cantwell saved with his left foot.

Basildon’s best chance to levelling the match came with five minutes remaining when Jake Oulds connected with a volley at the back post, but a superb last gasp clearance from Daniel Edwards.

This proved to be the last real action in front of goal, with the Gulls completing a fine season by lifting the cup.
