Canvey Island U9's Lions 3 - 3 Wickford Town U9's Lion Match Report

Match Report

This re-scheduled game kicked off to a great start from the Canvey Boys. The passing between the mid fielders was second to none with all the play in our attacking half. Several shorts went slightly wide as Archie Blackburn and Levi Causton tested out the Wickford keeper. Wickford only had the ball for brief moments and were swiftly tackled by Jared Blake and Harry
Neal in defence.

After 10 minutes Finlay Dobson had possession of the ball at the hlf way line and blasted it towards the Wickford goal. The ball sailed sweetly through the air leaving the keeper floundering as it shot into the back of the net. Canvey continued with superb one touch football involving Jordan Bloss, James Harrison and Archie Blackburn. This was probably the best our boys have played and was a pleasure to watch. Just before half time the relentless Canvey attack resulted in Levi Causton netting yet another goal to this seasons tally.

The second half Canvey continued the pressure but an early break from Wickford saw a very scrappy goal being conceeded. Canvey remained dominant with Finlay hitting the cross bar and James shaving the side post. Wickford gained a free kick and crowded the Canvey box. Goalkeeper Jack Sims valiantly tried to save the shot but had limited vision due to the numbers in the box.

This brought the score to 2-2 with time running out. Canvey were by far the superior team with controlled possession and passing. The pressure was on to score and James Harrison ploughed down the left, passed to Archie who flicked it on to Jordan , who set up Levi. Levi cracked the ball towards goal with a strong shot, the goalkeeper managed to stop the ball but lost control. Finlay then followed up and managed to flick it past the keeper for our third goal. Just as time was running out

Wickford were given a free kick. Perhaps the Canvey defence were a little sluggish due to lack of action in their area and Canvey were having trouble clearing the ball. The result was an unfortunate own goal where the ball was sliced and span into our net. The boys and our supporters were gutted. The whistle went laving us with a draw. Wickford must have had someone smiling down on them as this should have been a Canvey win. The boys
played fantastic football and dominated the entire game.Wickford had a couple of lucky breaks and scrappy goals. However, we still remain unbeaten and top of the division.
