Match Report Canvey Island U8's had a bright start and battled well against this top of the table team. Our passing game was much improved and we looked the stronger team throughout the match. A great victory and our first win of the season!!! Canvey pushed on from the start and Byron Bracket made a good break down the left in the 3rd minute, a crisp pass to Thomas Diss who found Henry Sims clean through on goal. Only brave keeping kept us finishing this well made chance. The match was quite even for the next 5 minutes with both midfields working hard, Canvey’s much improved passing game always kept us one step ahead though; it was a rare break way that saw one of Leigh Ramblers few shots on goal blasted wide to the left of Harry Bates upright. Our reward came in the 13th Minute when we again broke away on the left, this time the impressive Harry Harrison picked the ball in his own half and ran down the left wing, his pass up field went to the feet of Henry Sims who passed the ball on to Thomas Diss, now clean through on goal, Thomas finished well in the top right hand corner giving the goalie no chance. 1 - 0 Canvey!!!!! Leigh pushed for an equaliser, but Canvey defended well with some good defensive blocks and alert keeping from Harry Bates. Canvey again broke away in the 17th minute, but the move broke down in the final third. From the goal kick Leigh broke up field in the closing minutes but a smart save from Harry Bates kept us one up at half time. It was much of the same in the second half with end to end football. Canvey always carried more threat up front showing more composure on the ball and excellent passing skills. On 24 minutes Leigh’s best chance of the game comes as a well taken corner deflects of Henry Sims leg and hits the Canvey post, the ball is scrambled away though and, with our lead intact, we break straight down the other end, Henry received the ball in the penalty area and some brave keeping prevents Henry scoring. The two resulting corners are well defended by Leigh and some how the score stays at 1 -0. The final 10 minutes are a nervous time for Canvey but solid work from the midfield and defence keep Leigh at bay and they never really looked like getting back into the game. The only other chance Leigh had fell on 31 minutes but the shot was well saved by Harry Bates who had a solid game between the posts. In summary Canvey dominated this game through slick passing and great team work, officially Harry Harrison was man of the match, but in my view all of them were…this was a great team effort and Canvey’s first win of the season against some strong opposition as well!! Great work Lads!!! TEAM: 1 – Harry Bates – A good solid game never looked like conceding. 2 – Reece McDonough – Back from injury and played really well. 3 – Adam Pickett – (Sub 20) Came on at half time and defended well. 4 – Harry Harrison –(sub 6) Came on for Byron in midfield and had a fantastic game – Man of the Match . 5 – Harry Herbert - Had a great first half in defence before being substituted at half time. 7 - Henry Sims (c) – Another strong game up front and much improved passing game set up goal. 8 – James Heys – Worked his socks off in the first half before being substituted at half term. . 9 – Thomas Diss– A good all round match and scored his second goal of the season. 10 – Byron Brackett - Started the match well and battled hard in midfield.
