Match Report

Canvey Island comfortably defeated Basildon United 3-0 in a reserve team fixture at Park Lane.

With the Gulls’ first team fixture at Brentwood called off because off a waterlogged pitch and Basildon without a game, both teams elected to start with their first eleven. Jay Curran notched a hat-trick as Canvey dominated this game against their Essex Senior League opponents.

Basildon did start brightly with Dave Kreyling having to block a goal bound effort on 8 minutes. Just before that the Basildon forward had contrived to miss an open goal as Canvey made a sloppy start to the game.

Canvey gradually settled though and after Curran had seen a shot on goal blocked by the defender, they took the lead on 29 minutes. Steve Corbell’s left wing cross found Curran completely unmarked at the far post and his shot was deflected into the net off of a Basildon defender.

Canvey dominated the rest of the half with goalkeeper Mel Capleton rarely tested and with Chris Bourne and Nicky Rugg coming on at half time, they stamped home their authority in the second half.

Within a minute of the half starting, Daniel Francis forced the keeper into a good save, parrying his shot at the far post over the bar. Francis then fired a shot off target two minutes later as the young winger nearly celebrated his international call up to Dominica with a goal.

Steve Corbell curled a free kick from outside the box over the bar on 57 minutes and a minute later a fine right wing cross from Curran was met by Gabriel Fanibuyan who couldn’t quite keep his header down as it cleared the crossbar by inches.

Canvey though extended their lead on the hour mark. Steve Corbell delivered in a fine left wing corner that was met by Curran at the far post whose header went into the net off the underside of the crossbar.

It was nearly three minutes later when another fine cross from Corbell found Francis whose downward header was held superbly by the keeper.

Ryan Edgar was replaced by Stuart Batch with 25 minutes left and Canvey comfortably saw out this time, sealing the win with a third goal four minutes from the end. An excellent move saw Francis find space down the right wing and he drilled in a low cross that the unmarked Curran tapped home at the far post to complete a fine hat-trick and seal the three points.

This was overall a good work out for Canvey with Daniel Francis, Corbell and in particular Curran having impressive games.

Canvey are next in first team action next week when high playing Edgware are the visitors to Park Lane in an important Ryman Division One North fixture.

Yellow’s Man of the Match:

JAY CURRAN:  A superbly taken hat-trick to continue his fine recent scoring form.
