Gulls To Relaunch Academy For 2019/20

By Club Admin

Partnership With Creative Sport & Leisure

Canvey Island FC are delighted to announce the relaunch of our partnership with Creative Sport & Leisure (CSL) to provide a bespoke football academy programme.

The club had previously worked successfully with CSL in running our academy, a system which has helped launch the career of several Bostik Premier and Bostik North players.

The main aims of the Future Skills Football programme are:

  • To develop players by making them employable and more attractive to employers by up-skilling them in the sport and physical activity and spectator safety industries
  • Improving their footballing ability and opportunities by training and playing matches in an elite standard environment
  • Providing opportunities to move into higher level 'paid football' where applicable, while preparing the players for a realistic pathway after the programme

The Future Skills programme has been carefully designed based on feedback and recommendations gathered from learners, employers, football clubs and Sport England's ‘Working in an Active Nation’ consultation.

Using recommendations from the consultation, the programme will implement a diverse strategy with more emphasis on demand – led sessions, soft and transferable skills and behaviours, health and well-being coaching and more understanding of children through to senior adulthood development.

The consultation identified a shortage in leadership and management skills which prevent the progression and growth of the industry. As coaching qualifications have changed, there has become a gap in the market for assessors for new coaches coming through the system.

Out of all of the sport/activity businesses that were surveyed during the consultation, 56% expected their workforce to increase over the next year, with operational staff being the easiest to recruit with 75% of these coming from college programmes. These businesses however, highlighted that, recruiting operational staff that were suitably qualified or experienced was much harder.

By affording the players on the Future Skills programme the qualifications that industry require, together with the realistic work experience, attracts employers and puts the players at an advantage when applying for coaching sport and physical activity and spectator safety positions.

While on this 36 week programme, the players will train 2 mornings per week, play in a structured college league, study multiple qualifications and work 5 hours per week in an environment relevant for progression into employment. Match and training kit will be provided along with good quality facilities. While playing on this programme the players will have the opportunity depending on ability, to progress through the levels at the club and play in the FA Youth Cup.

Information sessions will be held at Canvey Island FC's stadium on the dates:

  • Thursday 23rd May - 18:00
  • Thursday 6th June - 20:00
  • Saturday 29th June - 10:00
